Families can visit the adventure play area near Crozier car park and explore Nelly's Moss lakes. The six-mile Carriage Drive connects the main areas. National Trust members and under-fives enter free. House, entrance and grounds have different closing times and winter arrangements vary.

Durham University Botanic Garden

Durham, DH1 3TN

A ten-hectare university garden with woodland, glasshouses and plant collections from around the world. Children aged 16 and under enter free. Published garden hours are 10am–4.30pm from March to October and 10am–3pm from November to February. The garden closes around Christmas and New Year; confirm the exact dates before travelling. Some garden paths are steep, so check the access information when planning your route.
