About this event
Watch Durham Cathedral’s Christmas tree lights come on and look closely at a nativity scene with a North East story of its own. Carved by a Durham miner, the crib includes a pit pony in place of a donkey and a shepherd carrying a miner’s lamp—details children can look for as the family joins the traditional carols and blessing. The service welcomes all ages, including children, and begins at 3.30pm on 13 December. No tickets are required. Families who wish to contribute can bring unwrapped presents, wrapping paper or a cash donation for the Salvation Army, but these are optional. It’s a Christmas service that connects the familiar nativity story with the area’s mining heritage.
