October half-term activities in the North East

Step back in time at Beamish, the Living Museum of the North, where historic streets, working trams, farms and costumed staff bring regional history to life. Children can explore hands-on exhibits, meet animals and move between different periods of North East life.

A large family adventure park combining farm animals, animal encounters, indoor soft play, outdoor play structures, family rides, tractor rides, go-karts and seasonal activities. General admission includes the principal rides, play areas and animal attractions. Diggerland Durham also has indoor play areas, including a two-storey soft-play frame for children up to 8 and a Little Tikes area for children up to 5, plus a sensory room. Height limits and adult supervision rules vary by ride, so check the ride chart before booking; children under 90cm can enter free when measured on arrival. The park opens on selected dates rather than a fixed weekly timetable, so pre-book and check the official calendar before travelling.

A museum, reconstructed Anglo-Saxon village and working heritage farm exploring the life and times of Bede. Families can see rare-breed animals, explore historical buildings and use nearby Drewitts Park. Allow at least half a day. These are the regular term-time hours; the museum also opens on Tuesdays and Wednesdays during school holidays and closes for part of winter.

A former colliery exploring Northumberland's mining and social history through original industrial buildings, exhibitions, art and family activities. It sits beside Queen Elizabeth II Country Park and has a café and picnic spaces. Under-18s enter free and an adult ticket normally provides an annual pass. The museum opens every day during Northumberland school holidays.

A free railway museum in Shildon with large collections of historic locomotives and railway vehicles across two major halls. Families can explore railway history, follow outdoor rail trails and attend additional school-holiday activities. A café, baby-changing facilities and indoor and outdoor picnic areas are available. The museum closes from 24 to 26 December and operates longer hours during summer.

Verified against Hopetown. Term-time opening is Tuesday–Sunday 10:00–16:00; school holidays are Monday–Sunday 10:00–16:00. Admission is free, but tickets are required and some experiences cost extra.

An interactive science centre with hands-on exhibits, live demonstrations, experiments, making activities and the North's largest planetarium. The programme changes throughout the year and frequently includes activities designed for preschool children, families and teenagers. Standard admission includes the principal science-centre activities and planetarium shows, although spaces are allocated on a first-come basis. Term-time hours may differ from the current summer schedule.

A free cultural venue and library overlooking the River Tyne, with books, interactive exhibitions, family activities, creative facilities and regularly changing events. There is also an on-site café, although its hours are slightly shorter than the main building's. Some workshops and ticketed events need to be booked separately. Check the events programme before visiting to see what is currently available.

A large city park beside Newcastle's Town Moor with a lake, open lawns, paths, a children's playground, skatepark, outdoor gym and free tennis courts. It is suitable for a short playground visit, picnic or longer walk around the park and Town Moor. The park itself is free to visit. Café availability has recently been subject to change, so do not rely on it being open without checking first.
